Raise your hand if you struggle with goals! I know for me, goal setting was something I absolutely hated to do. The fear of failure loomed large, and it often held me back. That began to change when I discovered two game-changing tools: the book The 12 Week Year and the concept of having a Word of the Year.

A Word of the Year has been instrumental in keeping me grounded, motivated, and aligned with my goals. Whether you create art with it, incorporate it into your planner, or display it prominently in your workspace, this single word can serve as a powerful anchor for both personal and business growth. It can keep you focused, inspire clarity, and even help streamline your content creation.

The purpose of a Word of the Year is to act as your “North Star.” Imagine gazing at a vast night sky, overwhelmed by the endless possibilities, until you spot the North Star—a beacon to guide your way. Your word can provide that same sense of direction in your life and business.

Life is always changing, and having a Word of the Year allows you to navigate those changes intentionally. It helps you see the big picture while focusing on the small, purposeful actions that contribute to your grand design.

It’s also an incredible tool for combating overwhelm. When life feels chaotic or goals seem out of reach, a quick glance at your chosen word can refocus your energy. For example, my word this year, Evolve, reminds me to embrace change and find purpose in the journey.

Finally, your Word of the Year can foster clarity and consistency. By integrating it into how you show up for your customers—through your social media, content, and interactions—it reinforces your values and builds stronger connections with your audience.

How to Choose Your Word of the Year

Step 1: Reflect on the Past Year

  • What worked well? What challenges did you face?
  • Which areas of life or business need the most growth or improvement?
  • Are there recurring themes or feelings you want to embrace or avoid this year?

Step 2: Visualize Your Ideal Year Ahead

  • What do you want to achieve in your business and personal life?
  • How do you want to feel throughout the year—empowered, confident, balanced?

Step 3: Brainstorm Potential Words

  • Write down a list of words that align with your vision (e.g., “Focus,” “Evolve,” “Strength,” “Balance”).
  • Use a thesaurus or word association to explore related ideas.

Step 4: Narrow It Down

  • Pick one word that resonates the most with your goals and intentions.
  • Ask yourself: Does this word inspire you? Can it guide your daily actions?

Step 5: Define What the Word Means to You

  • Write down your personal definition of the word and how it applies to your life and business.
  • Example: If your word is Evolve, it might mean embracing change and growing intentionally.
