You know…I had to think for a minute about this one and how I could relate sailing and lighthouses to planning, but once I thought about it for a minute I realized that they are very much related and great metphors.

1. A lighthouse is a guiding light. Just like a lighthouse guides ships safely to shore or away from home, our planners do much the same. When we take time to plan we can chart our course, set goals and stay on track even when life throws us some enormous challenges that we might not be ready to face.
2. Navigating the things you can’t really prepare for, like in sailing. Sometimes the waters are unpredictable and we might not know about an undercurrent or an upcoming wave we weren’t expecting. Life is unpredictable sometimes as well. Planning can help us to anticipate obstacles that might pop up, it can also help us to adapt our actions if we need to. And we can do it confidently because planning helps us to face the unknown.
3. What about heading out on an adventure? When we plan we are encouraging ourselves to embrace the adventure in life, maybe personal growth, a new challenge, an opportunity for actual adventure and travel, or maybe even exploring unknown opportunities. With a plan you can think ahead to how you want to chart that course and adapt as you go.

Whatever the reason that you use your planner as long as you are consistent with it, it will take you to new places with new adventures and have a guide to help you through difficult times or even planning to take on new things in your life.
